No. 17 Villiera wines - Stellenbosch

For the months of Spring, I am on a mission to find the best bubbly and Rosé wines in Stellenbosch. #DoStelliesFirst up is my 17th wine farm which is Villiera.watermark Villiera-wines-tasting-room-stellenboschThe tasting room is small, intimate and comfy however if you are in a larger group, the tables can be pushed together so there is plenty of room - especially outside. What strikes you first is this extensive wine bar. Just look at the opulence!Villirea-wine-bar-stellenboschThese chairs were really comfy.villiera-wines-seatingIt is best to taste MCC in the morning ;) Jacket from River Island.pink-fluff-champagneThe staff are so friendly that even the resident cat greets you :)sleeping-cat-wine-barI think we woke him up - oops.villiera-wine-bar-catStacy and I booked the MCC and Nougat pairing. It costs R80 per person and takes place Mondays through to Fridays from 09h00 - 17h00 and Saturdays from 09h00 - 15h00.Tastings are available throughout the year.Booking is essential.villiera-wines-stellenbosch-woman-mccMy word was it delicious! There are four MCCs, 3 nougat cubes and one Turkish delight to taste:

  • Grier Brut MCC with the honey nougat and almonds/cranberries
  • Villiera Tradition Brut MCC with honey nougat and macadamias
  • Monro Brut MCC with honey nougat and almonds
  • Tradition Brut Rose MCC with Sally Williams Turkish Delight (Rose)

They all paired perfectly together - it is really the best sweet pairing I have ever tasted. The dry brut MCC balances out the sweet nougat just right.villiera-wines-mcc-and-nougat-pairing-stellenboschThe glasses and coasters are beautiful and really added to the experience.villiera-wine-tastingThis is the Grier Brut which is a product of France! It pared beautifully with the Sally Williams Nougat cranberry.I have never heard of some of these names before but it is 50 % Maccabeu, 25%  Carignan noir en blanc de noir and 25% Chardonnay. R200 a bottle.villiera-brut-grier-mccThis is the Tradition Brut is a dry blend of 50% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir, 16% Pinotage and 4% Pinot Meunier and was left on the lees for 3 years.Tradition was the first Cap Classique produced by Villiera in 1984, with the help of Champagne producer Jean Louis Denois. The cream and the red label indicates the use of white and red grapes used in the blend.R101 a bottle.villiera-wine-mcc-tradition-brutI absolutely loved the Monro! It reminds me of Marilyn for obvious reasons 😄 Elegant, strong and full of bubbles. It is a blend of 55% Chardonnay, 45% Pinot Noir and was left on the lees for four and a half years. It's called the Villiera Monro Brut 2008 and its R195 a bottle. My favourite so far!villiera-monro-mcc-jeansQuite yellow in colour, fine bubbles, a light foam and intense flavours. You can clearly see the darker colour of the MCC in this photo.Villiera-wines-monro-mccThe beautiful Villiera wines MCC Brut Rosé consists of 40% Pinot Noir, 30% Pinotage, 25% Chardonnay, 5% Pinot Meunier. It is called "Tradition" because of its history - in 1987 it was the first bottle fermented Rosé produced in South Africa and is now known to be a leader in this category. R101 a bottle.villiera-tradition-brut-rose-mccThis is the outside area. It was beautiful to sit here and listen to the birds in the trees.Villiera-wines-outside-areaVilliera does not have a restaurant but they do offer a canape pairing or as they call it a "Amuse-Bouche". Click here to learn more.BOOKING IS ESSENTIAL (Mon - Fri: 10h00 - 16h00 | Saturdays: 10h00 - 14h00)They also have small cheese platters available but keeping in mind the opulence of the wine, I think they can improve on the cheese platter offering.Keep a close eye on your wine and cheese platters though because this cat wants to share it with you :) cat-with-wineIf you have some time on your hands, you should take yourself through the self guided cellar tour just opposite the tasting room.Another bonus is that you can even go on a game drive! Read more about it here: http://www.villiera.com/Page.aspx?PAGEID=2642&CLIENTID=3484wine-cellar-tourMy favourite was the Monro and my friend's was the Brut Rosé.leanne-by-tasting-room       stacy-by-barAs you leave the farm, the views are beautiful, I can just imagine what it is like in summer when the trees have leaves again. If you need any information on the wine farms in Stellenbosch, you can either search for the hashtag #DoStellies or you can visit this site: http://www.wineroute.co.za/ path-entrance            views
