What an absolute gem in the middle of the Breedekloof Wine Valley about an hours drive out of Cape Town. Opstal winery was established in 1847 and today has it all, including wine tasting, a restaurant, and even self-catering accommodation.

Opstal Accommodation

If it's views you want, it's views you will get! Opstal luxury accommodation is brand new and boasts a KolKol wood-fired hot tub, overlooking the incredible views of the valley. The hot-tub takes a bag of wood and 1-2 hours to heat up fully. I really enjoyed this process and took full advantage of the sunshine while I was waiting for the tub to heat up. The tub remained warm into the evening where I gazed at shooting stars, drank some red wine and even spotting a firefly or two!

Enjoy a king-sized bed, quality towels, fully equipped kitchen, braai area, indoor fireplace, dining area, and even an outdoor shower! The en-suite bathroom is open plan so you would need to feel very comfortable with your partner if you are sharing a room. No TVs here because that defeats the object, it is however equipped with Wifi and an alarm.

During the evening whilst I was braaing, we welcomed a little guest...a Jack Russel named Nellie. If you meet Nellie on your stay, she is not lost, she is being naughty and is looking for biltong - or so the owner of Opstal said :) haha. The Barber 2018 is a Cinsaut which was absolutely divine to sip on, chilled, right by the fire.

Opstal Wine Tasting

Enjoy wine tasting less than a kilometer from the accommodation.

The tasting room is small and intimate with an incredible stoep in the restaurant where you can sit too. There are three ranges of wines available including a classic range, heritage range and a value range dedicated to the workers of the land who are 2nd generation on the estate.

Taste any 5 wines for R50. I would highly recommend tasting all the Chenin wines as this winery and wine valley is highly awarded for this wine variety. Take note of the Carl Everson Chenin - it is made from certified heritage vineyards. There is also a very interesting "barber" range which includes a Cinsaut and a Semmilon.

You will enjoy listening to the stories of the wines as the wine is poured. The walls are also decorated with little bits of historic information that will intrigue you.

Opstal Breakfast

If you are in the area, even if you are not staying at Opstal accommodation, I would highly recommend the breakfast! The french toast is to die for! If you are staying at Opstal accommodation and need to do a quick shop, there is a cute little farm stall just up the road for basic supplies however I found it quite nice to order from the restaurant :)

I cannot believe how much beauty there was to see in this valley. I am so fortunate to have started this blog to explore uncharted territory such as this and I hope I can encourage you to explore too!
