UNIQUE PAIRINGS AT BERGSIG IN BREEDEKLOOF
I found myself exploring the Breedekloof Wine Valley during a weekend stay away and stumbled upon Bergsig Winery. Family run since 1843, Bergsig is owned by the Lategan family and produces some incredible white and red wines. I particularly enjoyed their premium white blend.
Location
Bergsig winery is about an hour's drive from the city center of Cape Town so if you are thinking of visiting, make an entire weekend of it and book accommodation. The tasting room caters to all types of weather with an indoor and outdoor area although I would recommend this for a summer's day. If you have kids, there is a jungle gym and grass area too.
The inside area is a little tired as far as decor goes but welcoming, classic and comfortable.
Wine Tasting
For a family-run winery, Bergsig has some pretty interesting wine pairing options like a meatball and wine pairing (R150) or a spring roll and wine pairing option (R40). A standard wine tasting is R45 and there's quite a large range to choose from too. The service is super friendly albeit a bit slow so sit back, relax and enjoy the country life.
The Wine
There are four wine ranges to choose from, namely:
- Bergsig Range
- Reserve Range
- Icarus Range
- Lategan Reserve Range
This region has some incredible Chenin Blanc but don't be shy to try the red wines too! The Icarus range is definitely something to try if you are interested in blends, Bergsig has recently won some Michaelangelo awards too.
I really had a great time tasting the wines and meeting the friendly people at Bergsig Winery. It's a Bistro too so why not plan this stop around lunchtime.

So which wine farm is next?
Until then, cheers!
