BOUTIQUE WINE AND BEER DELIGHTS AT KIRABO IN BREEDEKLOOF
On a spur of the moment spree, I ventured into the Breedekloof Wine Valley, about an hour's drive out of Cape Town, on a late Sunday morning when I discovered that Kirabo Private Cellar was one of the only cellars open. Thanks to Google!
The Location
Kirabo Private Cellar was quite easy to find on Google maps and when you arrive, you may ask yourself if you are in the right place - it has that homely feel. Once you enter though, you will be welcomed by the friendly Kirabo staff - in my case, it was the Kirabo winemaker himself :) Score!
The tasting room had a bit of a rustic/old school charm about it but it was the outside area that I loved most. Kirabo Private Cellar is a family-run grape farm going back 6 generations!
Kirabo Wine Tasting
It was only in 2009 that the family decided to make their own wine and today even make their own beer called Broer Beer. There are 5 wines available for wine tasting at R5 a glass with some pretty good servings. They only produce red wine such as Merlot, Shiraz, Petit Verdot, a Barrel's End blend and Cupcake (off-dry) all barrel matured and handcrafted.
As for the beers, there are two beers available for tasting at R5 a glass and I was lucky to also sample an experimental gooseberry infused beer - YUMMY! Unfortunately, all the beer was sold out of stock but it was nice to taste it!
This winery is definitely for the more laid back, red-wine enthusiast. It should be ok for kids to join however there is an energetic farm dog so I would recommend to rather keep this a couples treat on a hot summer's day.
What a great boutique wine farm find! Afterward, we headed to Oumeul for lunch which was just up the road. We found out that Kirabo also does delectable wine pairings, platters, and even desserts however a 24-hour warning and booking is required in advance.
