Neil Ellis Wines in Stellenbosch Started out with Just a Cellar

Neil Ellis Wines is my 141st South African wine farm visit. They have a "newish" wine tasting centre in Stellenbosch which is absolutely lovely with incredible views.

They didn't start off like that though, owner Neil Ellis, started winemaking in 1984 and would source grapes from all over Stellenbosch to make his wine in a rented cellar space. Today, this wine has made a brand for itself and is synonymous with top-quality reds! Especially Cabernet Sauvignon.

Getting to Neil Ellis winery is really easy, it's about a 40-minute drive from Cape Town city centre and is quite a direct route from the N1 and into Stellenbosch. The winery is newly built with plenty of parking.

The tasting area is quite big with a wine bar and various seating options overlooking the barrel maturation cellar. There's a beautiful big fireplace too!

The outside area is absolutely fantastic however only 4 tables so go early to get your spot! You would also need to plan your visit to go on a sunny, wind-free day.

Wine Tasting

There are three different wine tasting options ranging from R50 to R100 per person for five wines. I opted for the Site specific range.

The service was friendly and professional and the wine was served in beautiful big glasses, each wine explained. It was hard to find a favourite but if I had to choose, I would say the Chardonnay, Cinsaut and the Cabernet was my favourite!

Food Menu

Neil Ellis doesn't have a restaurant so do not come hungry. They do however have really great cheese and meat platters for two - although this was quite a lot of food, you could squeeze three people in to share.

In conclusion

Neil Ellis is definitely for wine lovers who enjoy quality wines with interesting site-specific wines that spend time in barrel. The venue can definitely cater for 1 - 10 people with summer (November - March) being the best but winter months can be enjoyable too. I would not recommend this winery for kids, and definitely not pets. Expect to make a quick visit to enjoy the wine and learn about their winemaking techniques.

I spent a good two hours at Neil Ellis and absolutely enjoyed looking at the views whilst sipping on the wine and snacking on the platter.

Until next time,

much wine love

Leanne
