GlenWood Vineyards in Franschhoek has the Best Sushi and Wine Menu!
GlenWood Vineyards in Franschhoek is my 140th winery visit in South Africa and it's about an hour's drive out of Cape Town. Can you believe that this winery is one of the newest in the Franschhoek valley having only been fully developed in 1984? The farm is a little bit off the beaten track with about 2km of dirt road but once you arrive, it is like an oasis!
This winery can accommodate visitors in the summer or winter months with adequite space inside and outside. I would however recommend this winery for the summer months (November - March) so you can sit outside and enjoy the views.
Wine Tasting at GlenWood Vineyards
Wine tasting is R100 for five wines which includes two Chardonnays, a Rose and two reds. If you spend R500 or more on wine per person, the tasting fee is waivered.
GlenWood is of course famous for the awarded Chardonnay. I tasted all three including the unoaked, oaked and flagship wine which is not normally for tasting. The flagship wine spent 24 months in first-fill French oak barrels so it is no wonder it tastes so good and is R570 a bottle. The unoaked goes for R150 and the oaked for R250.
The "Save our Rhinos" Rose was something special at R100 a bottle, proceeds go to the Rhino Revolution non-profit organisation.
GlenWood Sushi Restaurant
Glenwood has a rather unique all sushi menu - something quite different from the norm here in Franschhoek. Franschhoek is the gourmet capital of Cape Town after all. I found it quite enjoyable to do the wine tasting first and then order a glass of your favourite wine to go with your sushi.
The platter you see above is a combination of plates served on a boat and was enough for two people. As one can imagine, sushi and wine does not come cheap but the menu does offer great value.
In Conclusion
I really enjoyed my time at GlenWood and would recommend this for 2-6 people. I would not recommend this winery for children. If you are a lover of sushi and chardonnay then this winery is for you!
