FOODIE AND MAZE WONDER AT SOUTH HILL IN ELGIN
What a great spot in Elgin - South Africa's coolest climate wine region - just an hour's drive from Cape Town. South Hill is my 114th winery visit out of 800 and has it all from wine tasting, a restaurant, art expo, accommodation and even a very unique Vineyard Maze! It's the perfect place for larger groups and can even be great for the kids too. Expect to spend the entire day here...because you will! ;)
Location
The wine tasting room doubles up as a restaurant and art gallery. I love how you can sit inside or outsite and enjoy a wine tasting at the table before munching on some amazing platters and tapas. And just look at this divine fireplace!
Wine Tasting
Taste 5 wines for R50, 3 x Kevin King wines for R45 or choose 5 wines from both ranges for R95. As this is a cool climate region, I would highly recommend sipping on the white wines here on a hot summer's day - especially the Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. If you're not a fan of white wines, fear not, there are red wines and even a Rosé too.
After your wine tasting, be sure to take a walk through the very unique vineyard maze. Expand your knowledge on the estate and also have fun with the kids. The maze is a lot harder than it looks after a few glasses of wine haha.
Food
I absolutely love wine farms that have restaurants! After a good wine tasting, there is nothing better to satisfy the soul. South Hill have quite a wide range of cheese and meat platters, fresh bread and specials of the day. I opted for a deconstructed pie - yum! The platters are around R140 and you can choose from an array of tapas for R65. They also do rib-eye burgers for R115.
Bonus - they have the most amazing coffee and coffee art! Plus, the staff are really friendly.
Accommodation
If you're lucky enough to get a reservation, South Hill has a large family home to rent for periods at a time and a smaller romantic getaway called The Pump House which is beautifully situated right on the lake. This venue is perfect for weddings.
