VL Christina rocks Women's Day
The Christina range of wines from Van Loveren Family Vineyards in the Robertson Wine Valley, South Africa, are the perfect treat this Women's day - why? Well when we hear of Van Loveren, we think Four Cousins (who are all men) and that's a lot of dudes. But did you know that the very name "Van Loveren" is the idea of a woman?
The farm was originally called Goudmyn when it was purchased by Hennie Retief Snr and his wife, Jean, in 1937. The farm got subdivided into smaller sections and their farm was then given the name "Goudmyn F". Now, "F" can stand for many things we can think of these days (LOL) and Jean Retief also didn't like it - in those days it could stand for "fools and failures". She didn't like that!Jean Retief had a bridal chest which was passed down from generation to generation. It belonged to one of her ancestors, Christina Van Loveren. Christina was married to the first Van Zyl to arrive in South Africa in 1692. The bridal chest is believed to still be on the farm to this day!And so, hence the new name of the farm called Van Loveren and the tribute to this woman, Christina. I enjoyed three wines from this range...First up was the Christina MCC. It had very good bubbles upon pouring and it wasnt too dry or creamy. It had more of a fresh style, with a vibrant zest on the palate. It's 71% Chardonnay and 29% Pinot Noir having spent 9 months on the primary lees and then 22 months secondary. This MCC has recently won a 2017 Platter Guide 4 Stars and retails for R894 per case of 6 bottles. Here are the tasting notes: Christina van Loveren MCC
