Wine farm number 14 is Beaumont Family Wines in Bot River, only a one and a half hour's drive from Cape Town.I drove through for the Spring Weekend festival and stayed over for two nights just down the road in Fisherhaven on the lagoon.Bot River sure is beautiful! The rolling country side and running lagoons make it the perfect weekend getaway.This is the wine tasting room and restaurant. It is small and intimate.It was so humbling to meet with the wine maker, Sabastian Beaumont himself, he was pouring the wine for everyone to taste. Beaumont-wine-maker-and-lea The tasting fee is R40 per person unless you purchase a bottle.Some wines are produced in small quantities. Like the Ariane 2014 Bordeaux blend which is named after the Winemaker's sister.There were only 60 bottles left at R180 each limited to two per customer. The tasting notes say: Dark berry fruit aromas with an elegant oak influence followed by dark broody black berry fruit and hints of spice on the palate.Cabernet Sauvignon 80%, Cabernet Franc 10% and Malbec 10%. I bought a bottle just to tryThis is the Beaumont Hope Marguerite 2015 which was named after the Winemaker's grandmother.This was the first wooded Chenin Blanc I have ever tasted and it was really good!This old vine Chenin Blanc is naturally fermented in 400L French oak barrels.Beautiful aromas of dried apricot, marzipan and spice with hints of green apple and integrated oak on the palate. It is their flagship wine at R240 a bottle. I loved it! Sold!This was also my first taste of Mourvèdre! The Beaumont Mourvèdre 2012 was like a Shiraz only fruitier and the nose was exceptional.Leather, violet and red berry tones on the nose followed by herbal fynbos spice, liquorice, and black berry fruit on the palate with a characteristic core of tannin. Beaumont-mourverde I also enjoy a good Pinotage and South Africa is famous for producing some of the best in the world.The Pinotage varietal is sometimes given a bad name as it is made from very small, bitter, dark berries. It just has to be grown and made right for it to taste good.This tasted good so Beaumont is certainly getting something right!The tasting notes say: 80% of the fruit comes from our 40 year old vines providing dryness and structure while the younger portion provides lovely vibrant fruit. 14 months in the barrel.Fresh red berry fruit with a deliciously drinkable medium body and well integrated tannins.A consistent 4 star winner in Platter.Matches very well with bobotie, game and curries, spare ribs and pepper steak, or try snoek and grape jam.R145 a bottle.If you are feeling hungry, the prices of food are pretty good and local :)Just outside the tasting room, they were selling some lovely herbs.It was extremely windy when I visited but I can imagine how marvelous it must be to sit outside and take in the surroundings. I had such a good time, I decided to get two bottles and add it to my growing collection. :)Best for smaller groups of people (2-6 people).Suitable for smaller children.
