Jasons Hill in Breedekloof has been Growing Grapes for Six Generations

Jasons Hill is my 136th winery visit in South Africa which I stumbled upon during a family vacation to the Breedekloof valley, about a 1.5-hour drive from Cape Town. I stayed at Opstal estate accommodation where I enjoyed a wood-fired hot tub and gorgeous sunsets every night.

Jason‘s Hill was named after an old shepherd who herded his sheep on the estate. Today, this family-owned winery have been farming grapes for six generations but it was only with the last generation that their own wine labels were born.

Jason‘s Hill Wines have been achieving awards ever since it began making wine in 2002. Some of the most highly acclaimed awards they have achieved to date is the Diners Club Young Winemaker of the Year in 2003 and the first-ever Woman Winemaker of the Year Award in 2004.

The winery is quite easy to find and after a short drive down a dusty road, you will come across the small tasting room. The inside area is really quite small but the outside area is massive!

Jasons Hill Wine Tasting

Of course, with this being the Breedekloof valley, one simply must try all the Chenin!

Definitely, a stand out for the whites was the Beatrix Chenin and for the reds was the Izak. I also thought that the Jasons Creek offered great value!

Tastings are R50 and R100 per person.
Monday – Friday: 08:00 – 17:00
Saturdays: 10:00 – 15:00

They unfortunately do not offer food however you can ask for a cheese platter at R150.

Service is knowledgeable and friendly.

More to Explore

In true country style, you can find a gift shop and play area for the kids complete with an every. On a nice day it is great to be able to walk around and explore.

They also have a 6,6km trail with two waterfalls and a running stream during the winter months. It’s a difficult route and should be done with extreme caution. Hikers should start before 13:00 and it can take up to four hours to finish. Registration at the reception desk is required. Price for Hiking is R50pp.

In Conclusion

I really enjoyed stumbling upon this gem and would highly recommend it for groups of 4 people, kids most welcome. Sunny days are best but the winery can accommodate you on rainy days too. Do not come hungry, rather come after breakfast or just after lunch.

I had a fab time just enjoying the wine and walks around the estate.

Until the next visit...

much wine love,

Leanne
