163 of 800: Saronsberg Cellar in Tulbagh, South Africa

Wine farm 163 of 800 is Saronsberg Cellar in the Tulbagh region of South Africa. This region is well known to be steeped in history and natural splendour. It was here, over three centuries ago, that the first settlers arrived and you can do a wonderful guided tour through the town centre to learn more. It truly is a fantastic getaway from Cape Town.

Saronsberg Winery is very close to the town centre and is surrounded by beautiful mountains on all sides.

Can I just say that visiting this winery towards the end of the day in winter at sunset is a MUST! The tasting room and garden area overlook a picturesque lake with a towering mountain and unique statue. The sun sets behind the mountain and the colours of the sky are just utterly romantic! Also, Saronsberg is famous for having the "Christmas tree" wine - just look at all the award stickers on their flagship wine pictured below.

The history of Saronsberg Cellar

The story of Saronsberg is one of resilience and renewal. I learned that just two months after the farm was acquired in 2002, they suffered a huge wildfire. The farm originally formed part of Twee Jonge Gezellen (Home of Krone - their neighbour) until it was divided between the two Krone brothers in the 1950s. Then called Waveren and Welgegund, which lie on either side of Twee Jonge Gezellen, were acquired in 2002 and renamed Saronsberg.

In January 2004 (my matric year actually!), Saronsberg's winemaking journey officially began with harvesting their first Sauvignon Blanc grapes. Over the years, Saronsberg has continued to achieve significant milestones, especially for their Shiraz grapes (since 2008) and the opening of Saronsberg Vineyard Cottages in 2013.

Wine Tasting at Saronsberg

Wine tasting at Saronsberg is just R120 to taste 8 wines and they serve each wine is a nice big glass too! What's more, is that the tasting fee is waivered if you purchase wines to the value of R200 or more.

Saronsberg has a diverse, full offering of wines ranging from Cap Classique, white wines, rose wines and red wines. My favourite summer wine was the Shiraz Rose.

The ultimate dinner wine is of course the Full Circle of which the 2020 vintage is now on sale. The tasting notes explain that this wine is a blend of Shiraz 80%, Mourvèdre 10%, Grenache 5%, Viognier 3% and Roussanne 2%. The wine has a deep, dark purple colour with prominent ripe plum, red berry and floral flavours with undertones of spice. The oak is well balanced with full, firm yet accessible tannins.

What is fascinating to me about the Full Circle is that the Shiraz component went into 100% new Allier French oak barrels. The different wines were then blended and spent 20 months in the barrel and a further 11 months to mature in the bottle before release. I was fortunate to sip an incredible 2015 vintage and fell in love! The 2021 vintage is currently available for purchase on their website. Now R650 a bottle.

You can also get a small cheese platter but it is very small and so just for a snack.

Accommodation at Saronsberg

What's a drive to Tulbagh without the perfect country accommodation? Saronsberg has 16 meticulously renovated self-catering cottages, each featuring en-suite bathrooms, spacious kitchens, inviting lounges, and dining areas, complete with fireplaces, braai facilities and a swimming pool for year-round enjoyment.

With linens and towels provided, relaxation begins the moment you arrive. Delight in an array of activities from wine tasting to scenic hikes and birdwatching. Whether seeking tranquillity or adventure, these vineyard cottages promise an unforgettable fusion of comfort and nature.

These cottages would be perfect for groups of 4 or two couples but units do vary. I absolutely loved the indoor fireplace to cosy up to at night.
