153 of 800: Seven Sisters Vineyards in Stellenbosch, South Africa
Seven Sisters Vineyards is my 153rd winery visit in South Africa and you will notice that it has quite a West Coast flair. That is because the winery is named after the seven Brutus sisters (and one brother) who once lived in Paternoster up the West Coast. At an early age, their father lost his job after serving 25 years in the fishing industry. They were subsequently evicted from their home and were split up to live with relatives.
Now, many years later, the family has reunited and acquired baron land in 2009. After many years of hard work, Seven Sisters Vineyards was developed into what it is today - a first-generation wine farm.
Seven Sisters Vineyards is one of only 3, 100% black owned wine farms.
The location
Seven Sisters is quite centrally located in Stellenbosch on the outskirts of Annandale road. The Tasting Room and restaurant is quite big and would be suited for small and large groups of people. Upon my visit, the outside area was quite windy but I am sure on a nice day, it will be lovely sitting under the umbrellas. You can definitely see the west coast flair coming through but overall, the winery is tastefully decorated with a modern touch.
Wine Tasting
There are two ranges of wines available, the "Seven Sisters" range which is the value wines including a Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinotage. They also produce Moscato, Chenin Blanc, Merlot and Cab however they are currently out of stock. The Seven Sisters Pinotage was my favourite and it was only R80 a bottle!
The more premium range of wines is the Reserve range consisting of a Chardonnay, Shiraz and a red blend which goes for R200 a bottle.
Taste 5 wines for R70 or three wines for R50. You can also check out their wine pairing menu which pairs wines with various seafood dishes. The wine servings are substantial and the wine glasses are lovely!
I enjoyed a wine tasting of 5 wines with a cheese and charcuterie platter. It was really great value for money as the platter was R295 which was sufficient for two people to share.
In conclusion
I had a lovely "rustig" time at Seven Sisters. Expect a slow and relaxed service by one of the qualified WSET servers. Booking in advance is definitely recommended but I do expect walk-ins would be welcomed too. I would not recommend this farm for children however if you do bring them something to play with, there is a large open field.
