The king of Zinfandel at 47/800 - Blaauwklippen, Stellenbosch

Wine farm 47 of 800 is Blaauwklippen Vineyards in Stellenbosch! This year they are 335 years old! Blaauwklippen are famous for their Zinfandel wines which are quite rare in South Africa. Blaauwklippen became the first winery outside of the USA to join ZAP (Zinfandel Advocates and Producers) in 2008. Be sure to attend one of their Sunday family markets.

Here is my experience:

 I booked the chocolate and wine pairing as well as a family lunch. Booking was really easy and confirmation was done online within a few minutes.I often like to visit this farm on a Sunday because they have such a great vibe with live entertainment and the sound of children laughing in the distance.Once you get inside, you will experience how homely it is - welcoming yet sophisticated decor with plenty of art on the walls.     Tables are mostly reserved and set up for you to enjoy. Each tasting comes with free bread sticks and water.Service was excellent.They poured all the wines, and took the time to explain each one as you made your way through the tasting. They then left you alone to enjoy what was remaining in the glasses.I particularly enjoyed that you could taste brandy as well as a dessert wineThe chocolates were great and well paired to each beverage. Not bad serving sizes either!You can purchase the chocolates as gifts among many other gifting ideas.  These wine labels below caught my attention. The labels are actually part of a wine club blending competition. The below was the 31st year blend which I will open for my 31st birthday :) This one was a blend of 20% Malbec, 30% Zinfandel, 15% Cabernet Franc and 35% Shiraz. The Blaauwklippen Barouche label is based on a specially designed artwork by well-known Stellenbosch artist, Frans Groenewald. If you are feeling a little adventurous, why not make your way to the spirits room for a gin tasting!  I opted to try some MCC over lunch :) This is the Blaauwklippen white Zinfandel MCC called Diva. Only R135 a bottle. It is fresh, with hints of granny smith apples and a hint of yeast. It was bottled for 16 months before disgorgement.  Lunch was really great too.There are many different platters to choose from and it can easily be shared by two people. The restaurant is also really great if you want to add more bread to the platter - simply ask. View the menu HERE.   Just up the garden path is an animal farm and market area. As you can see from the photos below, many families bring their own chairs and enjoy a picnic under the trees. The food and drinks at the market are very well priced.
