Painted Wolf Wines in Paarl Saves the African Wild Dog

Painted Wolf Wines is my 131st wine farm visit in South Africa. I met up with the owner, Jeremy Borg, in the tasting room and what a story!

Jeremy started the winery out of his passion for winemaking but also his love for Africa, in particular, saving the African Wild Dog. Did you know that there are only 6000 African Wild dogs left in the world today? Well, for every wine sold at Painted Wolf Wines, a donation is made to the conservation of the African Wild Dog. To date, the winery has donated R2.7 million to the conservation of these animals since 2008. I think that is incredible!

What's more is that they have excelled when it comes to awarded wines, achieving high scores for wine excellence with De Canter, Platters, The Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show, Tim Atkin, Veritas and Michelangelo.

Location

The tasting room is located on Paarl main road close to many restaurants and coffee shops. This tasting room, although small, makes you feel right at home. Best for groups of 2-6 people during any season. Kids are not advised. I would recommend starting your day with a wine tasting at around 11 and then afterwards, strolling to one of the nearby coffee shops for lunch.

Wine tasting is the standard R50 for five wines and Jeremy would recommend that you try the Den Chenin, The Lycaon Old Vine Chenin, the Den Pinotage Rose, The Pinot Noir and the Syrah.

I was also lucky to try the very prestigious Rousanne 2018 and the Pictus III Bordeaux Blend. Absolutely fantastic wines which I bought a few bottles of each. Jeremy does not own a wine farm but rather has a cellar and buys in grapes from various farms to make his marvellous creations. The result is a vast range of different wines, all very much a representation of different areas of South Africa.

In Conclusion

I had a fantastic time learning all about the different wines and story of Painted Wolf. I would highly recommend this winery for those interested in learning about different wines and those who like to support a cause.
