Meeting the Phantom at Spookfontein Wines in Hemel en Aarde

It was my first wine farm visit since March and boy oh boy did I pick a great weekend to do it at Spookfontein Wines. It was over the long weekend of Woman's Day and the middle of the South African winter. A 2-hour's drive from Cape Town and into the Hemel en Aarde wine valley which means "Heaven and Earth" in Afrikaans.

I met up with Manager, James, and Winemaker, Sol, who were able to tell me a little bit more about this modern wine estate. The farm owns a massive 300 hectares of which only 14 is under vine, the rest is dedicated to wildlife and Fynbos (which is the indigenous plant species to South Africa meaning "Fine Bush".) Established in 1847, The name ‘Spook’ is Dutch for “ghost” and "fontein" meaning "spring" - and so goes the story that one can see a “spirit” within the swirls of the flowing spring on the farm.

Sol started as winemaker here just over a year ago, moving from Argentina, and marrying a South African Winemaker because it was simply a match made in heaven.

Location

The winery is situated just off the main Hemel-en-Aarde road about a 2-hour drive from Cape Town, close to Creation wines. This valley is absolutely well known for the most spectacular views, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay because it is cool climate!

The architecture of the Spookfontein Wines Tasting room building is magnificent, blending in with nature, boasting waves and curves in natural brick.

There is plenty of seating available and so this location is good for smaller or larger groups. I would not recommend this winery for very active, small children because there isn't a specific play area for them to enjoy. This winery is better suited as a place for family and friends to meet for lunch and wine. The weather does not matter either, come rain or shine, its always tasting time!

Spookfontein Wines Tasting Options

Wine tasting is R50 for 5 wines and there is quite an extensive range to choose from. I particularly enjoyed the 2017 vintage Pinot Noir and the Phantom 2018.

Spookfontein Restuarant

I love it when wineries can pair good wine with good food! The restaurant offers a variety of meals. Be sue to book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Spookfontein Accommodation

Spookfontein has two accommodation units that boast rustic charm so that you can enjoy country comforts in serenity. The units are self-catering each equipped with a kitchen and fireplace to enjoy at one's leisure.

Not a drop of TV, WiFi or even cell phone signal here, so when I say serenity, I really do mean it. This is a great getaway for those wanting to "switch off". Both bedrooms in this unit had en-suite bathrooms.

I had a great time at Spookfontein wines and took advantage of the location by also visiting Creation Wines. Remember that bookings sell out fast, therefore it is best to book in advance. If you do make a turn please do tag me in your social media posts, I would love to see!
