158 of 800: Walker Bay Estate in Stanford, South Africa

Walker Bay Estate is my 158th winery visit in South Africa. This winery is situated about a 2-hour drive from Cape Town in the small town of Stanford which is just outside of the coastal town of Hermanus. It is quite a bit of a drive to do a day trip and so I would recommend booking some accommodation nearby, there are endless options.

Wine Tasting

What I love about this winery is that they have a "red chardonnay" with a wax seal at a good price (R150 a bottle). It is something novel which sets them apart. There are three different options for wine tasting. Select the white wine tasting for R90 for 5 wines, the red wine tasting for R100 for 5 wines or R100 for 5 of the estate wines. Their wines are of great value and quality. The staff are also well versed in how the wine is made (especially Angela who really did a great job explaining all the different wines to us).

Food and wine pairing

During my visit, I tried the cheese and wine pairing whilst my plus one enjoyed a chocolate and wine pairing. The cheese and wine pairing was R145 and the chocolate and red wine pairing was R185, each for five pairings. It was truly delicious which generous helpings of the food and wine.

Walker Bay Estate Restaurant

This wine farm/brewery has a lovely restaurant area which has daily meal specials on offer. I absolutely loved the hake and chips which was only R125. The food was very well presented, hot and fresh from the kitchen.

Cheese at Walker Bay

Stanford is apparently not only known for great wine but cheese too. Klein River cheese have set up a shop right next to the tasting room. There is a super wide variety of cheese for sale from which you might have already tasted in your cheese and wine pairing. You should totally check out their website as you can buy their cheese online: https://kleinrivercheese.co.za/ They even have a cheese of the month club!

In Conclusion

I absolutely loved my visit to Walker Bay estate. The staff were so friendly, the wine and food options endless and the outside area is such a gem in the summer months. There is a jungle gym for the kiddies and room for small or large bookings.

I walked away with a case of the Red Chardonnay and some yummy cheese to enjoy at home.
