105 of 800 is Kay and Monty Vineyards in Plettenberg Bay

This was my first stop exploring the Plettenberg Bay winelands and it just so happens that this winery was amongst the first in the Plettenberg Bay Winelands to start planting vineyards after Bramon.

The Estate

This winery is about a 7-hour drive from Cape Town in an area known as the Grags of Plettenberg Bay. It's a booming area for new vineyard growth and wine styles such as Sauvignon Blanc and MCC. When they talk about a Plettenberg Wine Route, they sure are right...there is literally a road to all the wineries.

A short gravel road drive leads you to Kay and Monty. What was once a polo estate that had a greenroom for orchids, is now sprawling vineyards and a wine tasting room come wedding venue.

For a boutique winery, they certainly do have an exceptionally large tasting room with panoramic views that overlooks a Lilly padded lake. Seating is plenty and so you can definitely arrive with 6-8 people, no problem. There's quite a casual and upbeat vibe about this winery. Expect to hear some music that you can sing along to.

In the winter, it's great too as there is a fireplace.

Wine Tasting

Kay and Monty Vineyards planted their first vines in 2004, produced their first vintage in 2012, and were awarded Gold for their 2013 Sauvignon Blanc at the prestigious Old Mutual Wine Show.

These wines are extremely boutique and are therefore not available anywhere else as they sell out at the venue. As you can see, the labels are quite unique, honouring the owner’s grandparents – Kay (Grandpa) and Monty (Grandma).

Taste 3 wines for R40. As this winery is still developing, I am excited to see what the future holds for these vines as they age and the unique style is refined. I particularly enjoyed the MCC called 'Champu'.

“At Kay and Monty Vineyards the intention is to keep the production small in order to deliver unique, hand crafted and appealing new flavours.”

The food

Enjoy a cheese and meat platter for R220. There are a selection of coffees and desserts too, so you really can spend a good couple of hours here. Service is extremely friendly and by the locals – they are not wine experts but they do try to explain the wines to the best of their knowledge.

The Views

The views are stunning! Expect to see horses/cows in the open fields and breathe in the fresh air. Other wineries in the area are Lodestone, Newstead and Bramon.
