Spier Wine Farm has just dropped the most delicious winter wine pairing and it’s only R170 per person. I recently tried this wine pairing for myself and was blown away at the quality. It’s called the ‘Seasonal Sips & Soups’ Tasting which combines four of Spier's award-winning wines with four comforting, seasonal dishes.

Creamy Pea Velouté and Good Natured Sauvignon Blanc

The journey begins with a creamy pea velouté, a velvety smooth pea soup topped with whipped goat cheese and a crispy parmesan tuile. This dish was paired with Spier's Good Natured Sauvignon Blanc, an organic wine that showcases Spier’s commitment to regenerative and socially conscious business practices. The wine's crispness enhances the creamy texture of the soup, creating a harmonious balance that delights the palate.

Forest Mushroom Consommé and 21 Gables Chenin Blanc

Next, one can enjoy the earthy richness of a forest mushroom consommé, a robust broth filled with sautéed forest mushrooms and a hint of truffle espuma. This soup finds its perfect match in Spier's 21 Gables Chenin Blanc, a wine that amplifies the earthy, umami flavours of the mushrooms. The combination of this richly flavoured soup with the wine’s complex profile really is a treat for the taste buds and nose too!

Stilton Velouté and Seaward Chardonnay

The tasting journey continues with a decadent Stilton velouté, a creamy cauliflower soup infused with Stilton Blue cheese, accompanied by a sable biscuit topped with fresh garden herbs and tangy pickled onion. This luxurious dish is expertly paired with Spier’s Seaward Chardonnay, whose creamy texture and vibrant acidity beautifully complement the velouté, enhancing its rich flavours and adding a refreshing balance. I must say, the small addition of the fennel herb on the creamy cracker, really took the tasting to another level for me!

Chocolate Tart and First Stone Organic Red

To conclude the tasting on a sweet note, you can indulge in a rich chocolate tart, a dessert that combines intense dark chocolate flavours with a sprinkle of Maldon sea salt. This indulgent treat is paired with Spier's award-winning First Stone Organic Red, a wine whose deep, robust flavours enhance the chocolate’s richness, creating a perfect ending to the tasting journey. One of my favourite South African red wines!
